“His name is Viper?” Vivian said as they climbed off the Harley.

They were in front of a sprawling, well-kept ranch house in a very remote part of New Mexico. Arizona wasn’t too far to the west, but as it was, they were miles away from civilization. They’d pulled off the main highway miles ago and had taken multiple deserted backroads just to reach this property.

“What’s wrong with Viper?” Fang asked.

“Nothing. It’s just that you and your friends have interesting names. How did you pick up Fang?”

He chuckled. “Long story. I’ll tell it to you sometime.”

The door to the hacienda opened to reveal a tall, strong man who looked to be in his mid-fifties. His hair was short, silver, and his face was rugged and handsome. He wore jeans and a simple, plain black t-shirt. He had quite a bit of ink on his arms. Behind him, a woman of about forty followed. She had silky blond hair fashioned into pigtails and wore a short, pink dress. She was carrying two lollipops.

“As I live and breathe, Fang is standing in my yard,” the man said.

Vivian smiled as she watched the men hug.

“Vivian,” Fang said after the embrace, “meet Viper. This man’s been like a father to me. And this is his Little. Duchess.”

“Hi,” Vivian said, bashfully holding onto Fang’s arm. “It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Viper.”

Viper chuckled softly. “Isn’t she a cutie?”

Fang nodded.

“Honey,” Viper said, “you can call me Uncle Viper.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Hi, Vivian,” the other Little said. “I’m Duchess. I’m so happy you’re here! I wanted a friend to play with for Christmas. It’s what I asked Santa Claus for!” Her smile momentarily faded. She took Vivian’s hand. “My Daddy told me you’re trying to get to The Crosslands by Christmas. I’m sorry you won’t make it. But we can have fun here.” She held up one of the lollipops. “Do you want one?”

“Yes, please,” she said. “Thank you.”

“Well, that’s the cutest, sweetest thing I’ve seen all damn day,” Viper said. “Come on. Let’s get inside. I’ve got a big ol’ pot of chili on the stove. Cornbread, too. Looks like we got us a snowstorm coming in tonight. Temps gonna drop at least thirty degrees.”

“Well, I’ll be damned,” Fang said, leading Vivian toward the house behind Viper and Duchess. “We’ve had good weather all the way here, but it is the right time of year for some snow.”

Once atop the wooden puncheons of the porch, Viper turned around and smiled wryly at Fang. “By the way, I put out the call. We’ve got some friends coming.”

Vivian clutched Fang’s arm. “They’re coming to help me?”

“Don’t look so apologetic,” he said with a wink and smile. “The Lords are family. One of us needs help, we all come runnin’.”

“Hell yeah,” Viper said. “We’re all in this together.”

“But I’m not a Badland Lord,” Vivian said. “And I hate people risking their lives for me.”

This brought a hearty laugh from Fang and Viper.

“What’s so funny?” Vivian said.

“Don’t worry darlin’,” Viper said. “We aren’t laughing at you.
