âHis name is Viper?â Vivian said as they climbed off the Harley.
They were in front of a sprawling, well-kept ranch house in a very remote part of New Mexico. Arizona wasnât too far to the west, but as it was, they were miles away from civilization. Theyâd pulled off the main highway miles ago and had taken multiple deserted backroads just to reach this property.
âWhatâs wrong with Viper?â Fang asked.
âNothing. Itâs just that you and your friends have interesting names. How did you pick up Fang?â
He chuckled. âLong story. Iâll tell it to you sometime.â
The door to the hacienda opened to reveal a tall, strong man who looked to be in his mid-fifties. His hair was short, silver, and his face was rugged and handsome. He wore jeans and a simple, plain black t-shirt. He had quite a bit of ink on his arms. Behind him, a woman of about forty followed. She had silky blond hair fashioned into pigtails and wore a short, pink dress. She was carrying two lollipops.
âAs I live and breathe, Fang is standing in my yard,â the man said.
Vivian smiled as she watched the men hug.
âVivian,â Fang said after the embrace, âmeet Viper. This manâs been like a father to me. And this is his Little. Duchess.â
âHi,â Vivian said, bashfully holding onto Fangâs arm. âItâs nice to meet you, Mr. Viper.â
Viper chuckled softly. âIsnât she a cutie?â
Fang nodded.
âHoney,â Viper said, âyou can call me Uncle Viper.â
âYes, sir.â
âHi, Vivian,â the other Little said. âIâm Duchess. Iâm so happy youâre here! I wanted a friend to play with for Christmas. Itâs what I asked Santa Claus for!â Her smile momentarily faded. She took Vivianâs hand. âMy Daddy told me youâre trying to get to The Crosslands by Christmas. Iâm sorry you wonât make it. But we can have fun here.â She held up one of the lollipops. âDo you want one?â
âYes, please,â she said. âThank you.â
âWell, thatâs the cutest, sweetest thing Iâve seen all damn day,â Viper said. âCome on. Letâs get inside. Iâve got a big olâ pot of chili on the stove. Cornbread, too. Looks like we got us a snowstorm coming in tonight. Temps gonna drop at least thirty degrees.â
âWell, Iâll be damned,â Fang said, leading Vivian toward the house behind Viper and Duchess. âWeâve had good weather all the way here, but it is the right time of year for some snow.â
Once atop the wooden puncheons of the porch, Viper turned around and smiled wryly at Fang. âBy the way, I put out the call. Weâve got some friends coming.â
Vivian clutched Fangâs arm. âTheyâre coming to help me?â
âDonât look so apologetic,â he said with a wink and smile. âThe Lords are family. One of us needs help, we all come runninâ.â
âHell yeah,â Viper said. âWeâre all in this together.â
âBut Iâm not a Badland Lord,â Vivian said. âAnd I hate people risking their lives for me.â
This brought a hearty laugh from Fang and Viper.
âWhatâs so funny?â Vivian said.
âDonât worry darlinâ,â Viper said. âWe arenât laughing at you.
